Is Your Website Working Against You?
A Self-Audit Guide for established businesses whose website no longer reflects the quality and credibility of their actual work.
You’ve been in business for a while. You’ve built real credibility. But when someone visits your website – does it confirm that credibility, or quietly undermine it? Answer these 10 questions honestly.
1. The First 5 Seconds Test
Ask someone who doesn’t know your business to visit your homepage. After 5 seconds, can they answer: What does this company do? Who is it for?
2. The Language Check
Read your website out loud. Does it use jargon your clients wouldn’t use? Does it explain what you do in their language – or yours?
3. The Credibility Match
Does your website look and feel as credible as the work you actually deliver? Is the quality reflected correctly?
4. The Last Update Question
When was your website last meaningfully updated to reflect how your business has evolved (not just small tweaks)?
5. The Inquiry Quality Check
Are your website inquiries coming from your ideal clients? Or are you regularly getting inquiries from people who aren’t the right fit?
6. The Competitor Comparison
Visit 3 competitors’ websites right now. Is your website as clear, credible, and compelling as theirs?
7. The Mobile Test
Open your website on your phone. Is it easy to navigate? Does it load quickly? Does it look professional on a small screen?
8. The Buyer Journey Check
Is it obvious what you want visitors to do next? Is the path to contact or inquiry clear and easy?
9. The Value Proposition Test
Can you find your key differentiator – what makes you different from competitors – clearly stated on your homepage within 10 seconds?
10. The Pride Test
When you hand someone your business card and they say ‘I’ll check out your website’ – do you feel confident? Or do you hope they don’t look too closely?

Mostly First Options
Your website is working well. Minor refinements may still improve performance as your business grows.
Mostly Middle Options
Your website is functioning but not optimised. You’re likely losing opportunities without realising it.
Mostly Last Options
Your website is working against you. It’s not reflecting your actual credibility – and it’s costing you trust.
The most important question isn’t what your website looks like.
It’s whether it’s doing the work your expertise deserves.
